At least 12 people were shot and killed and more than 30 wounded
in an attack at the U.S. Army base in Fort Hood, Texas -- one of
the the largest military installations in the world.
The mid-afternoon shootings occurred at a medical readiness
center for soldiers preparing to be deployed overseas.
U.S. Army Lieutenant-General Bob Cone:
SOUNDBITE (English) U.S. ARMY LIEUTENANT-GENERAL BOB CONE:
"The shooter was killed. He was a soldier. We have since then
apprehended two additional soldiers that are suspects. They were
eyewitness accounts that there may be one more than one shooter.
They tracked the suspected individuals to an adjacent facility and
they were apprehended. They are soldiers but they are suspects at
this time."
The wounded were taken to several hospitals in the area and the
base was locked down.
Meanwhile, President Barack Obama reacted to the attacks at the
Fort -- home to about 50,000 troops.
SOUNDBITE (English) U.S. PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA:
"My immediate thoughts and prayers are with the wounded and with
the families of the fallen. EDIT. It's difficult enough when we
lose the brave Americans in battles overseas. It is horrifying
that they should come under fire on an army base on American
soil."
The identity of the dead shooter and suspects in custody were
not immediately known.
