Peace Building: A New Approach to the Middle East Conflict

Pasadena, CA - Vision publisher David Hulme interviews Middle East diplomat Uri Savir about his newly-released book, Peace First, which calls for a new approach to the Middle East conflict. Savir calls this new model “peace-building” as opposed to “peace-making,” a concept embodied in one of the novice teams that joined in the Australian games this year for the first time: the Peace Team. Drawn from Israeli and Palestinian players, the Peace Team may not have won their match against Papua New Guinea on Saturday, but through the football program, they won something far more important: the experience of pulling together as a team toward a common goal.

This week, Israelis commemorate the 40th anniversary of their 1967 capture of East Jerusalem , but conflict over the city continues to this day. Why has Jerusalem been such a stumbling block in peace negotiations between the Palestinians and Israelis? Two surprising events immediately following the war serve as a symbol of the deep-rooted ties to Jerusalem of Israel’s first prime minister, David Ben-Gurion, and the former PLO president, Yasser Arafat. Fighting the Truce--Identities and the Israel-Hezbollah Cease-fire

Although the cease-fire has been in effect for just over week Israeli forces and Hezbollah militants clashed again early Saturday in eastern Lebanon. A ceasefire that does not lead to cessation of hostilities is a cynical sham at best.
