Between June 24 and June 26, 2009, the United Nations hosted a summit of world leaders “to assess the worst global economic downturn since the Great Depression.” The U.N. says the current economic crisis is “deepening hunger worldwide,” and warns that the effects of wide-scale hunger may have irreversible consequences on health, education and productivity.
